Townland Boundaries, Ireland – OSNI
About Product
Townlands are an ancient method of land measurement found only in Ireland. Historically they have been very important in genealogical research and can vary in size from a few acres upwards. The data has been created by combining source data from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and cleaning it to create a seamless boundary set. As the source townland data does not contain any boundaries for the cities of Cork, Dublin and Galway, the townland data has been combined with city council boundaries to create a dataset without holes. The combined dataset contains approximately 60,000 boundaries.
How is it used?
- Townland ID links to Eircode, enabling analysis of Eircoded data at townland level
- Import the boundaries into a mapping system for thematic shading according to your data variables
- Build territories using groups of townlands in conjunction with your customer data
- Overlay on detailed mapping
- Spatial searches (e.g. find all those that lie within)
What's key?
Townland boundaries for both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, created as a seamless layer for the whole island. Additional polygons based on city council areas to cover "holes" for Dublin, Cork and Galway. Clear definition of whether a townland falls in either the Republic or in Northern Ireland.
Fields & Attributes included:
